Shade tolerant; well adapted to all areas of Saskatchewan except the southwest; provides protection, food and shelter for birds and wildlife.

Latin name: Picea glauca (Moench) Voss

Type of tree: coniferous (native)

  • Bark (colour and texture): gray to brown; flaky with age; underbark pinkish when outer surface scraped away
  • Leaves (shape, size, etc.): needle shaped; 2 centimetres; sharp; stiff; borne singly on branchlets
  • Form: pyramidal in shape

Fruit and flowers: winged seeds produced in light brown cones that range between 3 to 5 centimetres in length; cones mature in September
